Brooks started Breaking in his early childhood by imitating what he saw on TV and in movies in the mid-80’s. He always had a fascination with graffiti and Hip-Hop music from the era as well.
By the early 90’s Brooks was completely captivated by Graffiti and underground Hip-Hop Music; at which point he began archiving old radio shows and collecting mix-tapes. In 1995 he stumbled back onto Breaking when some class-mates started “Breaking” at a track and field meet. “Really all they did was some top-rock steps into a butt spin and stopped in that freeze, you know? The one like you’re laying down and lounging out? So I went over there and started doing some footwork and whatever I remembered at the time.”
That began the journey and Brooks being quickly started seeking out everyone around the way that was Breaking in attempts to practice, train and get better. Not long after he had found a bunch of kids around the way and they started practicing all the time. “Yeah if it wasn’t for my homie Mike’s Footwork back in the day I wouldn’t have pushed myself as hard, that dude’s a beast for real!’
From this point, Brooks started making his way to jams and battles and had begun making friends with many other dancers among them he met his soon-to-be Kru members Reflex, Waak, Vigorous, Nemesis and Suitcase. “I mean, realistically, Breaks [Kru] was the first squad of heads I ever saw that would step up and cause trouble [RSC, Just Begun Crew & any out-of-towner in the Jam] and that was dope! I mean to me nothing is better than going against the grain!”
Soon after, Brooks started college and then transferred over to Temple University in Philadelphia, PA where he chased after his Bachelor’s of the Arts in English. He still practiced, got down and entered battles whenever his schedule would permit and would try to get back to NY as much as possible. “It’s tough juggling that schedule and then trying to maintain that Bboy Lifestyle but I did it.”
After graduation he was offered a position in a Theater Performance with Zen One Dance Collective and immediately after that an audition and extended placement in olive Dance Theatre with whom he still performs with to date. “I had met Vigs back in the day, you know? At Smith’s before 9-11 happened, but Vigs had moved down to Philly to pursue art, and magically he was a principal dancer in o.D.T. [olive]. It was inspiring so I wanted to give it a try. Through touring and performing for all different types of people around the states, Vigs and I developed a really brotherly bond and soon after he spoke to the Kru and they decided to put me down. I was so hype too because Breaks Kru is the only Kru I ever WANTED to be down with!”
Now Brooks is in Finance Management, is named as a Principal Dancer for olive Dance Theatre, has worked with various performers and companies like Montazh, Rennie Harris Pure Movement, The Hip-Hop Theater Festival and will continue to further his education and preservation of the Bboy aesthetic as best as he can. “I really appreciate every opportunity that I’ve been blessed with. Theater was never something I was interested in but now I feel as If it’s one of the best platforms I have to express myself and my love for my art. This is life outside the circle, Breaks Kru rock on!”
